Cut your electricity bills - sunlight is free, so once you've paid for the initial installation your electricity costs will be greatly reduced. A typical home PV system can produce around 40% of the electricity a household uses in a year. While you consume the electricity that you generate you avoid the cost of purchasing that electricity from the grid. As electricity prices are expected to rise sharply*1 over the next few years, the annual value of these savings is likely to increase.
Sell electricity back to the Grid - If your system is producing more electricity than you need, or when you can't use it, someone else can use it - and you could make a bit of money. Under the Feed-in Tariff, for a period of 25 years you are entitled to a payment from your supplier for each unit of electricity that you generate, whether you use it or not. The amount you earn depends on the type of system you have, and if you generate more electricity than you need, the Feed-in Tariff provides for an additional sum for any electricity exported.
The owners manual provided as part of your PV Pack installation explains how to sign up to register for the Feedin Tariff.
Finally, you will be reducing your household emissions. Solar electricity is green, renewable energy and doesn't release any harmful carbon dioxide or other pollutants. The Government calculates that you will save 568 grams*2 of CO2 for each unit of electricity that you generate, whether you use it or export it.
What you can expect from a 12 module (2.2kWp) system mounted at optimum orientation and angle!
To put this into context, consider that a typical 3 bedroom house with gas heating consumes 33000kWh of electricty per year at a cost of around £400. The total gas and electricty consumption of the house results in CO2 emissions of around 5 tonnes.
